Aspergers Syndrome in Adults

My interest in Aspergers Syndrome (AS) stems from personal and professional experiences working with this population.  I came to appreciate the amazing skills possessed by those with AS, and use their positive traits as building blocks in therapy.  Each person is a unique individual that shares various aspects of AS traits.

Aspergers Syndrome also known as High Functioning Autism is a neurobiological, developmental disorder.  In other words, the person with Aspergers Syndrome (AS) is born with a uniquely structured brain.

Let’s begin with the positive aspects:

Ability to focus on details

Capacity to persevere in specific interests, in spite of others’ opinions

Ability to work independently

Recognition of patterns others may not see

Original way of thinking

The following are domains that may present difficulty:

Social Interaction- being understood by others and understanding others

Social Imagination- understanding how others feel as they converse and interact with them

Sensory Issues- hypersensitivity to one or more of their senses- sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell

Therapeutic Framework:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Multisensory Tools, Organizational Skills, Social Skills.  Our Emotional Support Bunny is available for those who are interested.

Co-occurring Conditions

Frequently, AS is accompanied by other conditions such as: Social Anxiety, Generalized Anxiety, and Depression.  The therapeutic framework is expanded for the co-occurring conditions.
